Key Replacement or Rekeying

Most people don’t know if they need a lock rekeyed or replaced.

Rekeying Your Locks

When your locks are rekeyed, your springs inside the cylinder of the lock and the pins are removed and replaced with new ones. These work when a new key is inserted inside the lock. If the lock is inoperable it can usually be rekeyed and continue to work. Sometimes when the lock is rekeyed, it works better than it did before.

Why Rekey

In order to control a key to a certain lock, it may be necessary to simply rekey your lock. This is especially true if your property changes hands. This means that all of the keys will still operate the locks. Anyone who has had access to the home, whether it is the previous tenant or homeowner, the locks can and should be rekeyed. Some communities have construction master keys. If master pins are left in a lock it multiplies the amount of keys that can be used in the lock. Up to as many as 16 keys can open a single home lock. Rekeying eliminates these master pins and the probability of any other keys opening the lock.

Rekeying gives the locksmith the chance to really evaluate the lock and its locking mechanism to determine if the lock can be rekeyed or needs to be replaced. There are often many simple things that can be done to avoid replacing a lock. It could be something as simple as lubricating the locks to get them working properly again. In some instances the problem may be too bad and might require a whole new lock.

While this is something that we would usually suggest that a professional locksmith handle for you, there are some locks being designed today that enable homeowners to handle the rekeying themselves. However, don’t expect a standard pin tumbler lock. The types of locks that can be rekeyed are typically those that do not have to be disassembled. This means that you will not have to deal with a bunch of small parts and figure out where and how to insert them. These manufacturers make it easy to rekey locks without taking the lock completely apart.

Replacing Locks

There are some situations that simply require you to have your locks replaced. If your lock has worn out and it simply will no longer do what it is intended to do, it is time to bypass have the lock rekeyed. This means you’ll have to get the locks replaced. This is not a bad thing because locks need to be upgraded every couple of years anyway. It’s just that some situations force us to do what we continue holding off doing. If you want to make sure your investment, not to mention, your loved ones are well protected, purchase solid, durable, high-grade locks.

You may simply want to replace your locks for aesthetic purposes. A lever handle lock is easy to use and is also attractive. It is one of the most commonly used locks used today. Also, deadbolt locks are known for their level of durability and can be installed along with an interior thumb turn lock. Also, electronic locks are all the rage these days. It is more popular today than it was only a year ago. These types of locks make it harder for a thief to gain access into your home and offer a whole new level of convenience.

By consulting with a professional locksmith service that is also trustworthy, you will know in no time whether or not you are in need of new locks or your existing locks can simply be rekeyed. While rekeying might be more cost-effective and affordable than having locks replaced, this isn’t always necessary. However, in some cases, having locks replaced is absolutely necessary in order to secure your property. By hiring a reputable locksmith, you will not be wasting your money on unnecessary services. A good and trustworthy service provider will want to make a good impression on you so that you will utilize them again in the future and hopefully recommend their services to others. If you hire a less than reputable and reliable locksmith service, they don’t care as much. This shows in the quality of services that you will receive from them.

Another advantage to relying on a good locksmith service to handle your rekeying is that they will be able to offer you the best quality of hardware possible. You might think that you can find all that you’ll need from your local hardware store but this is not always the case. Locksmiths are known to be able to offer what a lot of local hardware stores are not capable of getting their hands on. There are plenty of options that can be discussed with you about your lock when you consult with a professional locksmith.

The final word on whether your locks should be rekeyed or replaced really depends on the circumstances surrounding the lock itself. However, you can never be too safe by having locks completely replaced if your doubtful about having your locks rekeyed. If you don’t mind paying a little more to have your locks replaced, you don’t have anything to lose but you certainly have a lot to gain. Replacing locks gives you and your loved ones peace-of-mind and helps you sleep soundly at night. We certainly think its worth the added expenses.
